On the 2nd of February, forty days after Christmas, the Church celebrates the Presentation of Lord in the Temple. The story, which accords with the command of the Torah that firstborn sons should be redeemed forty days after birth, having been dedicated to the Lord in memory of the Exodus, is recounted in the Gospel according to St Luke, chapter 2 verses 22 to 38. This account gives us the beautiful canticle, the Nunc Dimittis, in which the aged Simeon expresses the joy and peace of finally meeting the Messiah he has been awaiting.

To greet Jesus as the as “a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel,” the Church honours this day with a candlelit procession and a blessing of candles, hence the traditional name of the feast in English: Candlemas.

All Saints Church will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation on Thursday 2nd February with a Sung Mass and Procession at 6pm, followed by a Reception in the Rectory. All are welcome.
