News of People from
All Saints' Church
St Andrews

We list below current News of People and Events.

23 July 2010 -- Fr Ian Michael, celebrates a significant birthday on 23rd July. He passed a significant milestone on 29th June, The Feast of St Peter and St Paul, when he celebrated the 30th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. It was a Tuesday, and Fr Ian presided at the evening Mass, reminding the congregation that on the very day he was priested, a baby was born across the Atlantic in Alabama: Jake Andrews, now a member of All Saints and our Vestry Secretary. Jake and Chris were not in St Andrews on 29th June, but on holiday with family in California. However, before leaving, they promised to raise a glass in Fr Ian's direction.

July 2010 -- We bid farewell to Ben, an honorary member really and valued singer at evening services and Helen. We also say Goodbye to Anna Weerasinghe, who leaves the serving team and returns to Princeton after her year in St Andrews. Later in the summer, we shall also be losing David Clinton, who returns to Baylor University after a year's visiting fellowship in St Andrews.

June 2010 -- Few people will have known Julie and Adam Fedor, who were tenants in the Tower Flat for a year until this June, while Julie had a year's teaching fellowship in the School of History. She has secured a 3 year research position in Cambridge and they have moved south - to be replaced by Faith and Isaac Acker, who joined the congregation during the last year. Faith is a PhD student in the School of English and Isaac works in the School of Chemistry. They have taken over hall letting duties.

June 2010 -- Congratulations to a number of members (current, former and moving between those two states) of the congregation who have graduated this summer:
Julie Danskin, Rob MacSwain, Ben McAteer, Tobias Parker, David Smith and Helen Stocker.
Julie and David remain with us, for the time being at least; as does Tobias, who returns after the summer to begin an MLitt and to reclaim his servers' cassock. Rob returned briefly to pick up his doctorate before returning to the United States, though (as reported in the last issue) be will be back in town in September for the conference on David Brown's work.

6 June 2010 -- Amy White was baptized by the Rector.

16 May 2010 -- Micah Lewis was baptized by the Rector.

8 May 2010 -- A concert for Haiti, organised by Jacob Keet an undergraduate in the university who has been singing in our choir in recent months, was held in All Saints at 6.30 pm.

25 April 2010 -- Vince and Michael Edwards were baptized by the Rector, just days before the family returned to New York, John having completed his studies here. We wish them all - John, Lucia, Vince and Michael - happiness in the years ahead.

April 2010 -- Thanks to Joan Day, Barbara Graham and Susan Keracher for much hard work in the courtyard garden of the church, both before and after Easter.

April 2010 -- Ann Varley-Tipton has agreed to take on the role of Child & Vulnerable Adult Co-ordinator for the congregation.

April 2010 -- Jane and Phil Winn had been in St Andrews for over 25 years. They are in the process of moving to Glasgow, where Phil is now Deputy Principal of Strathclyde University, and where Jane is also now working. They have done a great deal for All Saints over the years, most of it behind the scenes. In recent times, Jane had been the Treasurer, as well as coordinating the flower rota, and Phil had been Rector's Warden and convenor of the Finance & General Purposes Committee, the pendant committee of the Vestry that deals with matters of money and property. Our loss (All Saints, the town, the university) is all gain for Glasgow. We wish them well in their new life in the west.

April 2010 -- Fr Rob MacSwain was back in St Andrews recently for his Doctoral Viva, which he passed with flying colours, before returning to the Seminary at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where his job title is Instructor Of Theology and Christian Ethics. All being well, he should be back in St Andrews for the university's June graduations, and again in September, this time as organiser of a conference on the work of another All Saints member, The Reverend Professor David Brown.

April 2010 -- A resident of Balnacarron, Frank Raeside has passed away. For something like 25 years, Frank was caretaker of the church and lived in the Tower Flat. His funeral was held in Perth; Robin and Gavin White travelled over for the service. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

April 2010 -- Spending an increasing amount of time on grandmotherly duties in Edinburgh, Julie Poole has retired from the sacristans' rota after 38 years attending to linen and silverware and vestments. We thank her for long and attentive service behind the scenes.

April 2010 -- Jimmy McCabe has retired as Prior of the Servers. Jimmy continues to serve at the altar, as he has for so many years, but without the extra duties involved in being Prior. We are very grateful for his long and dutiful service, quietly helping in many ways.

4 April 2010 -- One of our undergraduate friends, Tristan Franklinos, was baptized by the Rector on Easter Day. Tristan can frequently be found in the choir stalls, as duties in the St Salvator's Chapel Choir allow.

28 March 2010 -- This year's Bishop's Lent Appeal was for Haiti. A retiring collection was made on Palm Sunday which raised a little over £175. This has now been passed to the diocese.

16 March 2010 -- Alasdair Joel Pillar White was baptized by his grandfather, Fr Gavin White.

February 2010 -- Thanks to Robin and Gavin White, for the comfortable new chairs gifted for the North Hall in memory of Robin's aunt, Murielle Eldridge, latterly a member of the Wednesday Club that meets in the hall each week.

February 2010 -- Ros Powell and Charly Denniss gave an excellent and moving performance of the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi at the beginning of Lent which raised £200 for All Saints.

14 February 2010 -- Lettie Hutton achieved her hundredth birthday on 14th February. A card was signed by many in the congregation and she enjoyed a birthday party at Balnacarron.

January 2010 -- Charles Severs, for over fifty years a lay reader in the Anglican Church, the last decade or so here at All Saints, has moved on, though not from the town. Like all of us, Charles is on a journey of faith: his led him to being received into the Roman Catholic Church in January this year. We wish him well in this new stage of his life and discipleship. Charles says "Thanks".
